Almost Illegal in Italy
If you are a poker player, I hope that you don’t live in Italy. Italy is one of the few countries left in the world that has not yet legalized poker gambling. As a caveat, Italy only considers gambling in a physical location illegal. Technically, even the video online poker machines scattered randomly throughout the country are not completely in line with the law. So if you are an online poker fan, Italy’s legislative position on gambling won’t really affect you. The Italian population can access online casinos wherever there is a strong internet connection. As an added perk to online poker players, most European online casinos will accept Euros as their main currency. If you are an Italian poker player with a penchant for face to face games, or even a traveling tourist, do not worry. There are ways to get around the current ban on brick and mortar gambling. The most common method, as shown by the Italian Championship, is to travel over to Slovenia. It’s just a short trip, but Slovenia is much more open to gamblers of all types. Because of the difficulty in planning a national tournament out of the country, it is always a matter of debate whether the tournament will continue in the next year.
